## What Is Fuse Box Replacement?

Fuse box replacement swaps an Edison-base or cartridge fuse block for a modern breaker panel with arc-fault and ground-fault protection. The old fuse block comes out entirely, a new load centre goes in, every branch circuit is transferred onto a correctly sized breaker, the neutral bar is bonded properly, and the grounding electrode conductor is verified back to the water service or ground rod.

In Toronto the call almost always arrives with a deadline attached. An insurance renewal notice, a non-renewal letter, or a home inspection report ahead of closing puts a date on it. The document that resolves all three is the same: the ESA Certificate of Inspection, which confirms an inspector reviewed the work against the Ontario Electrical Safety Code (OESC).

Most fuse panels in the city sit on a 60A service, which is the second half of the conversation. A breaker panel on a 60A service is legal and insurable, but 60A does not carry a modern household. Since the utility has to attend anyway when the service size changes, the incremental cost of going to 100A or straight to 200A at the same time is far lower than treating it as a second project later. We quote both so the decision is yours.

Typical fuse-box-to-breaker jobs finish in 1 day. For the broader range of residential work, see

### Types of Fuse Installation We Replace

- **Edison-base screw-in fuses.** The familiar glass plug fuses. Easy to over-fuse, which is exactly why underwriters dislike them.
- **Cartridge pull-out blocks.** Usually the main and the range circuit. Common on 60A services in 1920s to 1950s Toronto homes.
- **Split-bus fuse and breaker hybrids.** A later breaker panel with a fuse-protected section still live. These get replaced as a whole, not patched.
- **Sub-fused additions.** A fuse block feeding a later addition or garage. The feeder is re-terminated into the new panel or converted to a proper subpanel.

## When You Need a Fuse Box Replaced

- **The insurer has written to you.** A renewal condition or non-renewal notice naming the fuse panel. See

    insurance-required electrical upgrades

    [/insurance-required-electrical-upgrades/ →](/insurance-required-electrical-upgrades/)

     for the documentation path.
- **A home inspection flagged it before closing.** Buyers’ lawyers routinely make the certificate a closing condition.
- **Fuses blow repeatedly.** A fuse that keeps going is telling you the circuit is loaded past its conductor rating, and replacing it with a larger fuse makes it more dangerous, not less.
- **You are renovating.** Any renovation that puts new circuits in front of an ESA inspector generally ends with the fuse block being replaced anyway.
- **You are adding modern loads.** A charger, heat pump or induction range on a 60A fuse service is not a capacity question, it is a service upgrade question. See

    60A to 100A service upgrades

    [/60a-to-100a-service-upgrades/ →](/60a-to-100a-service-upgrades/)

    .
- **The panel is warm or smells hot.** Stop using it and call. Heat at a fuse block means loose or corroded contacts carrying load.

## What Drives the Cost Between $1,800 and $5,000

**Service size** is the main lever. A conversion at the same amperage with no utility disconnect is the cheapest version. **Service entrance condition** is next: a corroded meter base, an aged mast and weatherhead, or undersized conductors push the scope up. **Panel position** matters because the code requires working space, so a fuse block in a closet or under a stair means the new load centre relocates and the feeder is rerouted. **Branch-circuit condition** is the fourth: deteriorated cloth insulation or aluminum terminations at the panel need remediation before the inspector signs.

The ESA permit fee is included in the quote. Where the service size changes and the utility has to disconnect, that coordination fee appears on its own line rather than being folded into labour.

## What to Expect on Conversion Day

If the service size is unchanged, there is no utility visit: we isolate at the main, remove the fuse block, mount the new breaker panel, and transfer circuits. If the service is being upgraded at the same time, the utility pulls the meter first and the outage covers most of the working day.

Circuits move across onto breakers matched to the conductor size, with arc-fault and ground-fault protection fitted where the Ontario Electrical Safety Code requires it. A whole-home surge protective device goes in at this point if you have opted for one. The neutral bar is bonded, the grounding electrode conductor is verified or replaced, terminations are torqued, and the panel schedule is written and fixed inside the door.

The ESA inspector attends, and once the Certificate of Inspection is signed you have the document your insurer or lawyer is waiting for. We hand it over with the itemised invoice.

### What Moves the Price

#### Overhead mast or underground lateral

An underground service entrance needs trenching and civil work, so it sits higher in the range than a mast and weatherhead replacement.

#### Panel brand and circuit count

Siemens, Square D / Schneider Electric and Eaton load centres price differently, and a 42-circuit panel costs more than a small enclosure.

#### Service entrance length and routing

Conductor length from the meter base to the panel, plus any wall penetration or conduit work, changes the material and labour line.

#### Scope flagged by the load calculation

An OESC Section 8 result can add a subpanel, a grounding electrode conductor or a meter base that was not in the original plan.

| Scope | Low | High |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Fuse block to breaker panel, same service size | $ 1,800 | $ 3,200 |
| Conversion with new meter base and conductors | $ 2,800 | $ 4,200 |
| Conversion combined with a 100A or 200A service upgrade | $ 3,500 | $ 5,000 |

## Why Choose Us for Fuse Box Replacement?

ECRA/ESA licensed, permit filed, utility coordinated, quote itemised.

- ### Built around insurance deadlines

Most fuse box calls come with a renewal or closing date attached. Tell us the deadline and we schedule backward from it.

- ### One-day conversions where possible

A straight fuse block to breaker conversion at the same service size is typically a 1 day job, so you are not without power across a weekend.

- ### Grounding and bonding corrected

Old fuse installations often have a grounding electrode conductor that no longer complies. We correct it rather than leave it for the inspector to flag.

- ### Honest 100A versus 200A advice

If you are paying for the utility disconnect anyway, we show you what the 200A option costs before you decide on 100A.

## How Does Fuse Box Replacement Work?

The sequence every job follows, from the first load calculation to the utility reconnect.

1. 01

    ### Read the existing service

Fuse block type, service size, cloth or aluminum branch wiring, meter base condition, and whether the insurer has set a deadline.

2. 02

    ### Decide the service size

Most fuse panels sit on a 60A service. We calculate whether 100A is enough or 200A is the better value given the utility work is the same.

3. 03

    ### Permit and utility booking

ESA Notification of Work filed. Where the service size changes, the utility disconnect is booked at the same time.

4. 04

    ### Conversion day

Fuse block removed, breaker panel mounted, circuits transferred with AFCI and GFCI protection where required, neutral bonded, grounding verified.

5. 05

    ### Inspection and certificate

ESA inspection, then the Certificate of Inspection goes straight to you so your broker can close the file.

## What Customers Say About Our Fuse Box Replacement Work

Real Toronto and GTA neighbourhoods, real panel jobs.

> Our broker would not renew with screw-in fuses in the basement. The conversion was done in a day and the ESA certificate went to underwriting the same week.

Hannah W.Cabbagetown

> They found the ground clamp on the water service had been cut during a plumbing repair years ago. Fixed it as part of the job and explained why it mattered.

Emeka O.Little Italy

> We were quoted for 100A by someone else. This crew showed us the 200A price with the same utility visit and it was barely different, so we took it.

## Fuse Box Replacement FAQs

### How much does fuse box replacement cost in Toronto?

A fuse box to breaker panel conversion runs $1,800 to $5,000 CAD. A straight swap at the same service size, with the panel staying in position, sits at the low end. A new meter base, replacement service entrance conductors, a panel relocation for working-space clearance, or a conversion combined with a 100A or 200A service upgrade moves it up. The ESA permit fee is included in every quote.

### How long does a fuse box conversion take?

Typically 1 day where the service size stays the same and the panel stays in position. It becomes a 2 day job when the mast, meter base and service entrance conductors are replaced too, or when the conversion is combined with a service upgrade that needs a utility disconnect window.

### Why do insurers care about fuse boxes?

Fuse blocks cannot provide arc-fault or ground-fault protection, they invite over-fusing (a 30A fuse in a 15A circuit), and the installations are old enough that the branch wiring and grounding are often non-compliant as well. Underwriters treat that as elevated fire risk, so many Toronto insurers decline, surcharge or set a replacement deadline. The ESA Certificate of Inspection is what closes the file.

### Do I have to upgrade the service at the same time?

Not always. If the existing service size still suits your loads, we convert the fuse block to a breaker panel at the same amperage. But most fuse panels sit on a 60A service, and once the utility is coming out anyway, going to 100A or 200A costs far less as one project than as two. We show you both numbers.

### What is AFCI and GFCI protection?

An arc-fault circuit interrupter detects the low-current arcing that starts fires in damaged or loose wiring. A ground-fault circuit interrupter cuts power when current leaks to ground, which is the protection required around water. The Ontario Electrical Safety Code requires these on defined circuits, and a fuse block cannot provide either. We fit them where the code requires.

### Will my old wiring pass inspection?

The panel conversion is inspected, and the ESA inspector will look at the terminations and the condition of the branch circuits entering the panel. Cloth-insulated or aluminum branch wiring is not automatically a failure, but deteriorated insulation at the terminations has to be remediated. We flag anything visible at the estimate so it is in the quote, not a surprise.

### Can you add surge protection during the conversion?

Yes. A whole-home surge protective device mounts in the new panel and is the cheapest time to add it, because the enclosure is already open and a two-pole position is available. It protects against transients from the grid and nearby lightning, which older fuse installations had no protection against at all.

### What happens to my existing circuits?

Each circuit is transferred onto a correctly sized breaker in the new panel, with arc-fault or ground-fault protection where the code requires it. Over-fused circuits get the breaker the conductor size actually supports, which occasionally reveals a circuit that was carrying more than it should. The panel schedule is written and fixed inside the door.

### Do you replace Federal Pioneer or Stab-Lok panels too?

Yes, though that is a different job. A Federal Pacific Stab-Lok or Federal Pioneer panel is a breaker panel with a documented failure-to-trip defect rather than a fuse block. See \[Federal Pacific Stab-Lok panel replacement\](/federal-pacific-stab-lok-panel-replacement/) for that scope.

### Is the certificate enough for a real estate closing?

The ESA Certificate of Inspection is the document lawyers and buyers' agents ask for as proof the panel work was permitted and inspected. If you are closing on a date, tell us and we will confirm whether the inspection can land in time before you commit.
