## What Does a Hot Tub Need Electrically?

A hot tub needs a dedicated 240V circuit sized to its nameplate current, ground-fault protection, a disconnect placed within reach but outside the prohibited distance from the water, and equipment bonding around the tub and pad. Most residential tubs in Toronto land on a 40A or 50A circuit, though the nameplate is the only thing that decides it, because heater and pump ratings vary between models.

Two things make this more than a simple circuit run. The first is capacity: a tub heater is a large load, and on a tight 100A service the OESC Section 8 demand calculation needs checking before anything is ordered. The second is the outdoor environment: the disconnect enclosure, the conduit and the fittings all have to be rated for exposure, and the foundation penetration has to be sealed properly.

Where the main panel has no free positions, an outdoor-rated subpanel near the tub is usually cheaper than a full service upgrade for one appliance. Where a service upgrade is already planned for other reasons, the tub circuit is incremental work while the panel is open.

For the wider residential range, see

.

### Installation Types

- **Dedicated circuit with exterior GFCI disconnect.** The standard job: conduit from the panel, through the foundation, to a weatherproof disconnect near the pad.
- **Long feeder with voltage-drop sizing.** Where the tub is at the back of a deep lot, conductor size goes up to keep voltage drop inside limits.
- **Outdoor-rated subpanel.** A small enclosure near the tub fed by one feeder, which also leaves capacity for pond pumps, landscape lighting or a future shed.
- **Combined with a service upgrade.** The tub circuit installed alongside a 200A service change as one project.

## When Panel Work Is Needed First

- **The panel is full.** No free positions means either an outdoor subpanel or a panel replacement.
- **You are on a 60A service.** A tub is not viable. That is a service upgrade conversation. See

    60A to 100A service upgrades

    [/60a-to-100a-service-upgrades/ →](/60a-to-100a-service-upgrades/)

    .
- **A charger is also going in.** A tub plus a Level 2 charger on a 100A service is normally where the calculation fails. See

    EV charger electrical upgrades

    [/ev-charger-electrical-upgrades/ →](/ev-charger-electrical-upgrades/)

    .
- **The existing tub circuit was never permitted.** Undersized conductors, a missing disconnect or no bonding all need correcting, and the correction gets permitted and inspected.
- **The panel is at end of life.** Adding a 240V load to a corroded or obsolete panel is not worth doing. See

## What Drives the Cost Between $800 and $3,000

**Distance** is the main driver, because it sets conductor size, conduit length and whether trenching is involved. **Route difficulty** is second: a straight run through a joist bay and out through the foundation is quick, while a finished basement ceiling or a long exterior run is not. **Panel capacity** decides whether a subpanel enters the scope. **Tub rating** is the fourth, as a higher heater and pump load means heavier conductors and a larger breaker.

The ESA permit fee is included in the quote. Bonding and the disconnect are part of the base scope, not extras, because the installation cannot pass inspection without them.

## What to Expect on Install Day

We confirm the nameplate data, set the correctly sized dual-pole breaker or subpanel feeder, and run the conduit. Penetrations through the foundation are sealed. The outdoor-rated GFCI disconnect is mounted at the code-required distance from the water and within reach of someone standing at the tub.

Equipment bonding is connected to the pad reinforcement and any nearby metal structures. Conductors are terminated and torqued, the panel schedule is updated, and the circuit is tested.

The ESA inspector reviews the circuit, disconnect placement and bonding. Once the Certificate of Inspection is issued, the tub is energized and we verify the GFCI trips and resets correctly under load before leaving.

## How Much Does Hot Tub Wiring Cost in Toronto?

A dedicated circuit with a GFCI disconnect is the base scope. An outdoor subpanel or a long feeder run moves the quote up.

### What Moves the Price

#### Overhead mast or underground lateral

An underground service entrance needs trenching and civil work, so it sits higher in the range than a mast and weatherhead replacement.

#### Panel brand and circuit count

Siemens, Square D / Schneider Electric and Eaton load centres price differently, and a 42-circuit panel costs more than a small enclosure.

#### Service entrance length and routing

Conductor length from the meter base to the panel, plus any wall penetration or conduit work, changes the material and labour line.

#### Scope flagged by the load calculation

An OESC Section 8 result can add a subpanel, a grounding electrode conductor or a meter base that was not in the original plan.

| Scope | Low | High |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Dedicated 240V circuit and GFCI disconnect | $ 800 | $ 1,600 |
| Long feeder run with foundation penetration | $ 1,400 | $ 2,400 |
| Outdoor-rated subpanel with hot tub circuit | $ 1,800 | $ 3,000 |

## Why Choose Us for Hot Tub Wiring?

ECRA/ESA licensed, permit filed, utility coordinated, quote itemised.

- ### Nameplate, not guesswork

We size the circuit from the tub's nameplate current and heater rating, not from a generic assumption about spa wiring.

- ### Disconnect placed to code

The GFCI disconnect has to be within reach but outside the prohibited distance from the water. We set it correctly the first time.

- ### Bonding done properly

Equipment bonding around a hot tub is a routine ESA inspection point and a genuine safety item. It is part of the scope, not an extra.

- ### Outdoor subpanel option

Where the main panel is full, an outdoor-rated subpanel is usually cheaper than a service upgrade for one 240V load.

## How Does Hot Tub Wiring Work?

The sequence every job follows, from the first load calculation to the utility reconnect.

1. 01

    ### Load check

The tub nameplate current against your existing service on an OESC Section 8 calculation, plus a check for a free panel position.

2. 02

    ### Route and disconnect position

Feeder route from the panel to the pad, and the disconnect located at the code-required distance from the water.

3. 03

    ### Permit filing

ESA Notification of Work filed for the new circuit or subpanel before work starts.

4. 04

    ### Circuit installation

Conduit run, outdoor-rated GFCI disconnect mounted, conductors pulled and terminated, equipment bonding completed.

5. 05

    ### Inspection and energization

ESA inspection, then the tub is energized and tested with the GFCI verified under load.

## What Customers Say About Our Hot Tub Wiring Work

Real Toronto and GTA neighbourhoods, real panel jobs.

> The tub supplier gave us a nameplate rating and they sized the circuit off it. GFCI disconnect placed properly and the inspection passed the same day.

Bridget O.Scarborough Bluffs

> Our panel was full, so instead of a service upgrade they put in an outdoor-rated subpanel for the tub. Much cheaper answer.

Jarrod W.Danforth Village

> Conduit run through the foundation wall was sealed properly and looks tidy, and they bonded the pad which the last electrician had not done.

## Hot Tub Wiring FAQs

### What electrical does a hot tub need in Toronto?

A dedicated 240V circuit sized to the tub's nameplate current, GFCI protection, and a disconnect placed within reach of the tub but outside the code-prohibited distance from the water. Equipment bonding around the tub and pad is also required. Most residential tubs land on a 40A or 50A circuit, but we size from the nameplate rather than assuming.

### How much does hot tub wiring cost?

A dedicated circuit with a GFCI disconnect runs $800 to $1,600 CAD. A long feeder run from a basement panel through the foundation to the back of the property runs $1,400 to $2,400 CAD. An outdoor-rated subpanel with the tub circuit sits at $1,800 to $3,000 CAD. The ESA permit fee is included in each.

### Do I need a panel upgrade for a hot tub?

Not usually. A hot tub is a large load but not a continuous one in the way EV charging is, so an OESC Section 8 calculation often shows a 100A service can carry it. Where the calculation is tight or the panel has no free positions, an outdoor subpanel is normally cheaper than a full service upgrade for one appliance.

### Why does the disconnect have to be a specific distance from the tub?

So someone can shut the tub off without reaching over the water, while keeping the switchgear far enough away that it is not in the splash zone. The Ontario Electrical Safety Code sets both a minimum and a maximum. Getting it wrong is a guaranteed inspection failure, and it is one of the most common mistakes on tubs wired without a permit.

### What is equipment bonding and why does it matter?

Bonding connects metal parts around the tub, including the equipment pad reinforcement and any nearby metal structures, to the grounding system so they cannot sit at different potentials. It protects against shock from stray voltage. It is required, inspected, and routinely missing on tubs wired informally.

### Can you run the circuit before the tub arrives?

Yes, and that is usually the best sequence, as long as you have the nameplate data or model number from the supplier. We install the circuit, disconnect and bonding so the tub can be set and energized as soon as it is delivered.

### Does a hot tub circuit need a permit?

Yes. A new 240V branch circuit is notifiable work in Ontario, so the ESA Notification of Work is filed and the installation is inspected. Insurers also ask about permitted work after any water-adjacent electrical incident.

### What if the tub is far from the house?

A longer run means a larger conductor to manage voltage drop, and often an outdoor-rated subpanel near the tub instead of a single long circuit. Trenching or an overhead route is priced as a separate line in the quote.

### Can the tub share a circuit with anything else?

No. The circuit must be dedicated to the tub. Sharing it is a code violation and creates exactly the nuisance tripping and overload conditions the dedicated-circuit rule exists to prevent.

### Can you add the tub circuit during a service upgrade?

Yes, and it is cheaper that way. If a service upgrade is already planned, the tub feeder and disconnect are incremental work while the panel is open. See \[200A service upgrades\](/200a-service-upgrades/).
